Top 5 May - Symptoms of Diabetes

Hiya, Babes! Welcome back to another Top 5 May post! With three posts behind us, we only have two more to go. Today is another medically related post about the symptoms of type 1 diabetes. So let's get started shall we!

For many of you, you will know that my significant other and several of our adopted children have been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Not to be with Type 2 that is insulin deficient and can be treated and sometimes cured with diet and exercise. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease that affects the beta cells needed for the body to produce and use insulin for proper glucose management*. JDRF is a wonderful resource for anyone looking for more information, support, and ways to get involved. Recently, one of our older daughters was diagnosed after a health scare. The signs had been there, but not brought to attention until it was an extra case, which is often what happens for many who do not know the signs and symptoms.

Lethargy
This is more extreme than your average case of fatigue brought on by lack of sleep, heat, etc. They will often show a lack of interest, no motivation to be active, and it isn't corrected by sleep or rest. Often times they may have what I call bursts of energy were they seem normal, but these will pass quickly and lead to exhaustion again.

Excessive Thirst
It is normal here in the south to increase your water intake with the heat; however, this is a thirst that seems unquenchable. No amount of water will seem like enough, even when it leads to our next symptom.

Frequent Urination
With the increase in thirst, you will see an increase in urination. Fighting off the blood glucose imbalance, urine production will kick up to try and rid the body of what ails it. Frequent urination can also lead to dehydration as well.

Weight Loss
Dropping weight rapidly and losing muscle mass is common as well. One symptom that I didn't mention is an increasing appetite. It may seem like they are eating anything and everything, but their body is burning those calories quickly. Weight will still melt off of them as their body continues to fight.

Changes in Mood
This is a symptom that is easy to notice, yet still overlooked often, especially in children and teenagers. The mood swings can happen quickly, without warning, and seem excessive. For example, frustration and anger when a person is usually patient and attentive to their emotions.

I hope these top five symptoms can help you look out for the signs of type 1 diabetes. With an increase in diagnoses each year, it is essential to know the signs before it progresses with serious and life-threatening complications. Are you or someone you know a diabetic? I would love to connect with you down below!
