Lipstick. It is one of the last things we put on when applying our makeup. And for me, I often just skip it. Lipstick has never agreed with me. I am lucky to get two hours of wear time, matte lipsticks included. Something about my lips protests anything to do with color. So when Hunter from The Girl From Alabama sent me the link to try a Lipsense color, I couldn't turn it down. Yes, I received this product from Red Gate Beauty for review, but you can rest assured that my thoughts and opinion are my own.
What is Lipsense?
Lipsense is a liquid lip color specifically formulated to be long-lasting. With bold claims like waterproof, smudge proof, and at to 18 hours of wear, you can imagine the word of this product has spread far and wide. My first introduction to the product was from Christy from the Planner Society. She often talks about what colors she is wearing on her Instagram stories. When looking into the product, I ran into a lot of reviews, some positive and some negative. I wanted to put it to the test for myself.
The Product Itself
First, I want to talk about pricing. It is standard that most consultants offer a starter bundle of one color, one gloss, and one oops remover for a base price. You can also purchase more colors and glosses separately. My experience has been about $50-55 for the bundle and prices around $20-25 for colors and gloss. Please note these prices may vary depending on where you purchase them, these are just the prices that I have found in my research.
Now that we have covered that, let's talk about the application process. The first step is the prep your lips. Properly prepping the lips will give you the right foundation for this product, so start by cleaning and fully drying your lips prior to application. You may choose to exfoliate your lips beforehand; however, I highly recommend that you avoid grease or oil-based products. After your lips have completely dried, you will move on to applying the color. You want to work in thin layers with the suggested three coats to build maximum coverage. Remember to keep your mouth open with your lips properly separated. (We will talk about what happens when you don't a little later.) The last step is to gloss your look with your gloss.
I chose the color Mulled Wine and the glossy gloss. First Application - My first application was somewhat sloppy. I wasn't aware of how quickly it dried and then didn't move. When first applying the color, it stings, especially considering how chapped my lips were. They are not joking when they tell you not to let your lips touch. If they do, they will stick together only to come apart when you pry them apart. All this aside, all the stinging and tingling is instantly relieved once you apply the gloss. Of course, you reapply the gloss as needed throughout the day. Throughout the day I reapplied and didn't have any issues with breakdown outside of the corners of my mouth. Later, I found that the corner break down was mostly from my lips exfoliating away layers of buildup from previously using wax based products
Since then, I have worn the product several times. Along the way, I have learned several tips and tricks that help with the application process. Applying in one swipe takes practice and patience; however, if you find yourself with light or dark spots when applying, try doing the next layer in the opposite direction. For example, my first layer I will apply by swiping from left to right. The second I will apply by swiping from right to left. I found that this helps to equal out the color. Over time the use of this product really exfoliates your lips and removes any wax buildup you have. My lips have been the softest they have ever been since I started using this product. I am really excited to try other colors and gloss, especially the opal gloss.
Testing Out Longevity
I wanted to really put this product to the test of its claims to be smudge proof, waterproof, etc. The first thing I wanted to test was the kiss proof test. Kissing my hand resulted in no color transfer. So I took it one step further. When visiting my niece and nephews, I kissed each one on the cheek. The oldest was appalled; however, it quickly turned to amazement when he realized that no color transferred to his face. Next up, eating and drinking. I didn't think much of it after eating a hot dog without any issue. That afternoon I went out to eat with my mother. As I was eating, I noticed that she was just staring at me. She was blown away that I was able to eat anything without issue. I took things one more step... I slept in the color. I know that is crazy and shouldn't be done; however, I wanted to see what state it would be in after eight hours rolling around in my sheets. The next morning the color was still just as saturated and ready for wear with only a tiny bit and break down around the corners of my mouth. So let's talk pros and cons:
Pros
- -Long Lasting (kiss proof and while eating)
- -Color Selection (there is a variety of shades)
- -Mix and Match (you can mix and match layers to create your own look)
Cons
- -Removal (I didn't have their removal and it was difficult to remove)
- -Longer to apply (This isn't a slap it on and run kind of lipstick)
Overall, I am in love with this product and will continue to use it. Please keep in mind this is the consumer's review of this product. I am not a consultant; however, I will disclose it is something that I am going to look into for the future. Being someone that doesn't like to reapply their lipstick every two hours, I loved this option. I love that there is a huge selection of colors that I can mix and match. I can change the look by changing the gloss while on the go. I can see this being a go-to product for events, work, weddings, etc. The only issues that I had were my own fault. I did not purchase the oops remover and I only tried things that I had on hand (ponds, alcohol wipes, olive oil, and makeup remover.)
I hope that you enjoyed this review of Lipsense as a product. I look forward to sharing more about it with you in the future.
